SHAPLA PREVIS

Here is the visual development of “Shapla” for my ongoing personal film project.

If you would like to see any of the animations for this project you can check out the following here.

As a South Asian Muslim artist, I really want there to be more representation of Asian cultures within the animation industry. This project is designed for me to learn more about the history and cultures from a wide range of communities as well as my own Bangladeshi heritage.

In the process of my learning journey, I am building a fantasy world and narrative driven by these colourful tales, and mythology in ancient Asia.

Here's a mock cel frame of ASHIN. This is how I dream my animations to look like. Amma (mum) are you proud of me!?

Also check out his taweez, his South Asian nose, his dark skin tone, his Dhoti, his sword and finally the background is based off a Bangladesh scenary and the red flowers and his blood against the greenery is inspired by the meaning behind the Bangladesh flag - "The red disc represents the sun rising over Bengal, and also the blood of those who died for the independence of Bangladesh. The green field stands for the lushness of the land of Bangladesh."

I'll stop rambling now, I'm just chuffed with this piece. I hope you enjoy the rest of my work for this project.

Here's another mock cel frame of another character called IYLA. She's hanging around in the mango trees, the harvest moon is out and she's in her element.

She's a practical gal hence why she wears her saree this way. she's not bothered that her hands and feet are muddy, it makes her feel more connected with her surroundings. She's adorned with tattoos and Asian-inspired silver jewelry. Her eyes are like the moon, something must have happened to her during a harvest moon.

Here's another mock cel frame of another character called ALEYAH. She's hiding in a lake surrounded by lily pads, she'll emerge from the water when the time is right.
